The glass on the counter was swearing. A train goes through the tunnel at one every morning. I just heard the whistle blow. I usually miss these shadows.

Emotional Intensity
I want to be stuffed with bubbles and watch everything drip saturation.  Engulfed by the cool breeze of adrenaline, my lungs stiffen.  A little bit out of control. I don’t think we have a word for that, but we’ve all experienced it regardless.

Nothing
Let them run when it’s late at night and things are soft and grey. My head is a barometer and my hip is an anchor and I float somewhere in between. Cars swish by and the streetlight turns red.

Afar
She smelled like Dove soap. She often wore Converse but sometimes wore her heavy work boots. Especially in the snow. She only wrote in blue pen. And she was always writing. Lists, notes, drawings were all scribbled down on scraps of whatever paper she could find. I didn’t know her name, but when she laughed my insides were scooped out and I held my breath to keep from losing that too.

Work hardening
Work hardening: When a metal experiences stress and strain that is beyond the limits of what it can take without being permanently altered and the metal becomes stronger. Now, read it again.  But replace “metal” with “person”.

This creative thing
It is mentally exhausting.  I am pushing against a brick behind my eyes.  A million, trillion words and none of them are right.  They scroll through like a stock market ticker.

And all she really wanted was firm actuality pressed against her lips.  She craved straining hands on her lower back and hip to thigh.  She needed to taste another’s uniqueness.

The Dam
Nothing could be heard over the deafening sound of the falls as the swollen river tumbled over the obstacle. Lights from the boathouses quivered on its dense surface. The frosty wind tangled our hair as we spread out our arms and yelled as loud as we could. But there was nothing but chanting water and lucid wind.

Gravity
I was drowning in the numbing rumble of the subway. Tangy screeches punctuated the turn. A woman struggled to keep her head from sinking beneath the undertow. The drug made her limbs heavy like she was stranded on some massive planet and couldn’t acclimate to the increased gravity.

Vandal
June thought for a minute as she stood at the decrepit sink.  The turquoise laminate was scratched through in some places and where it had completely chipped were smeared white bubbles.  Two of the sinks were slowly leaking water.  The place smelled vaguely of cigarettes and the wet brown paper towels that could be found in similar restrooms all across America.  June liked the feeling that in a...

It was dark in my room when I realized that alone was alone.  Perhaps a soul is all we are.  A single entity and nothing more.  I cried then.  It was too depressing to grasp within myself.  I was happy to make it home alive.  That is true sanctuary.
